This year marks the end of an era, as the Skywalker saga concludes with Star Wars – Episode IX, but it seems that Warner Bros. has plans to snap up actress Daisy Ridley for another big role – that of Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl.
WeGotThisCovered is reporting that sources from inside the studio have revealed to them that they are very close to announcing their casting for the role, and apparently, Daisy Ridley is one of the names at the top of the list. While nothing’s been confirmed, Ridley would certainly be a good choice for the role as she’s more than proved that there’s an action star within her.
The road to a Batgirl film has been a rocky one, as the role has remained untouched since Alicia Silverstone’s poor attempt at the role in 1997’s Batman and Robin. Originally, the solo film was to be helmed by The Avengers’ Joss Whedon, however the project was cancelled amid the horror that was Justice League and allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding the director – although the official reason was that Whedon “simply couldn’t find the right story.”
However, rather than simply leaving the idea completely, Warner Bros. have begun working on things behind the scenes, giving Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson the task of bringing Batgirl’s story to the screen.
Hodson said of the project, “I’m loving writing it, I can say that, it’s a total joy to work on. I love the character. And everyday I’m finding new things to love and get excited about.”
More on Batgirl when we have it.
