The first teaser for Disney’s live-action Mulan film has finally arrived.
As with the animation, the story follows the young Mulan as she risks it all out of love for her family and her country, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors.
When the Emperor of China decrees that a man from every family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country, Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei), the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps up to take the place of her ailing father.
Masquerading as a male warrior named Hua Jun, she must embrace her true potential and harness her inner strength to earn her place in the army’s ranks. This journey transforms the young woman into a respected warrior in the eyes of her father and the rest of China.
The cast of Mulan also includes Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.
Many fans of the original animated film have been disappointed to see that the film will not include the classic Disney soundtrack, or characters such as Mulan’s dragon guide, Mushu. However, what becomes clear from the teaser of Niki Caro’s film is that this adaptation is more about staying true to Chinese culture and taking the story back to the roots of the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan” on which the story is based.
Mulan is set for release on March 27th, 2020.
